Saudi Critical Care Society – Pediatric Meeting

January 21, 2009

Riyadh Military Hospital, Building 111 
 

The meeting was started by Dr. Sulaiman Al-Mohaimeed at 20:15 hrs with opening remarks and welcoming of the attendees. Dr. Al-Mohaimeed thanked all the participants for making time in their busy schedules to attend. 

The group introduced themselves and was given a chance to make any comments regarding the formation to the new Pediatric Critical Care Group.

  • Comments from the group were positive in nature.

  • There were numerous comments regarding a desire to come together as a professional group.

  • Additional comments were made regarding the hope that progress could be made in educating the public about the role of Pediatric Intensivists within the critical care community. 

  • Others voiced their feeling that the group could improve on the pediatric critical care educational programs available to health care workers within the Kingdom.

Dr. May Chehab expressed her desire that the group should grow and improve in a variety of areas including patient care and medical education. Dr. Hala Alem seconded Dr. Chehab’s comments and stated that the formation of the group was long awaited and is urgently needed. 

Dr. Al-Mohaimeed raised the need to plan and suggested that the Pediatric Group develop a 5 year plan in the same model as the SCCS.

  • This will be discussed at the next meeting after members have some time to think about the concept.

The group expressed a need that there be some form of leadership for the group and it was decided that the structure would be as follows:

  • Chairman

  • Vice Chairman

  • Board Members

  • Committee Chairpersons

    * Note: The group expressed a strong desire to include colleagues from the other regions of the Kingdom. It was agreed that an attempt would be made to nominate suitable board members from both the Eastern & Western Provinces. 
     

The group discussed the various positions and came to agreement regarding the executive positions posts. The following people accepted nominations for the executive posts:

Dr. Mohaimeed encouraged the pediatric group to use and contribute to the SCCS website. (http://sccs-sa.org) He also mentioned the upcoming event “Hot Topics in Neonatal & Pediatric Critical Care” which will be held in Al-Khobar. The symposium will be held at the Medical Education Center of KFHU. The symposium will take place on February 4th & 5th, 2009.

There was a discussion regarding the involvement of other professions such as PICU support staff. Numerous doctors felt strongly that other professions should be involved in the pediatric group. There was a group consensus that other professions with an interest in pediatric critical care will be involved.  However, it was decided that for the time being, only select other professionals should be involved until such time as the basic structure of the society is established. 

There was a suggestion that the group spend the next few weeks thinking about plans, projects and goals for the pediatric group. This suggestion was agreed on.  

Meeting frequency was discussed. A frequency of one meeting per month  for the time being was agreed upon. Meeting will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month and are to start at 20:30. The meeting will be held at the Riyadh Military Hospital – Building 111, main floor meeting room. 

Dr. Al-Mohaimeed reminded the group to think about ways to improve communication between colleagues so that we are able to effectively reach the majority of the Pediatric Intensivists in the Kingdom. Additionally, he stressed the need for the entire group to brainstorm regarding the needs and goals of the newly established group and share their thoughts with the group at the next meeting.

The date of the next meeting was set for February 17, 2009 at 20:30. The meeting will be held at the Riyadh Military Hospital – Building 111, main floor meeting room. 

The participants were again thanked for their participation & meeting was adjourned at 21:45
